Ocular Trauma
Blunt Trauma
Blunt trauma occurs when a dull object hits the eye or an area around the eye, causing damage to the eye itself or to the bones around the eye. Blunt trauma is often caused by sports equipment that hits the face, such as a bat or ball; getting punched or hit in the eye with a fist; and pellets from a paint ball gun that enter the eye. Blunt trauma complications include:
- Abrasions or swelling to the cornea
- Damage to the retina, pupil, iris, ciliary body, optic nerve, or lens
- Hyphema (pooling of blood between the cornea and iris)
- Eye rupture
- Retinal detachment
- Orbital fractures to bones surrounding the eye
- Hematoma (blood in the tissue that swells)
The doctor’s assessment in the emergency room indicates that Billy has blunt trauma from a rock being accidentally kicked into his eye. The rock is no longer in the eye but it did cause damage. The doctor continues to examine the eye to make sure he does not miss anything.
Sharp Trauma
Sharp trauma occurs when a sharp object such as a stick or knife strikes the eye or eyelid. Complications from sharp trauma include:
- A cut to the eye lid, either superficial or deep
- Subconjunctival hemorrhage (broken blood vessel in the eye)
- Laceration to the conjunctiva (cut to the mucous membrane covering the eye)
- Hyphema
- Misshapen iris or pupil
- Loss of intraocular pressure
Chemical Trauma
Chemical trauma is caused by cleaning supplies, pool supplies, pepper spray, mace or tear gas, and glues that splash the eye. These materials are either acidic or alkaline in nature, which damage the cornea and cause scarring. Complications from chemical traumas include:
- Increased intraocular pressure
- Inflammation and damaged tissue
- Cataracts
- Cornea tearing or swelling
- Corneal lesions
- Loss of vision
- General eye discomfort
